Cannot execute a document

There is a setting available to administrators that forces all documents to be executed as a PDF, if the document has PDF set as an available display mode. (The setting is called Default Document Execution Mode, and it can be set to PDF.) If this setting is enabled and a document does not have PDF as one of its available display modes, then the document can no longer be executed by clicking its name/link. The document can still be executed in any of its available display modes by using the icons to the right of the document's name.

Flash Mode does not appear in the View menu

To view a document in Flash Mode, the following requirements must be met:

Flash Mode must be enabled in the project that you are using.
Flash must be enabled in the document that you are viewing.
You must have the Adobe Flash Player installed on your computer.
Flash Mode must be enabled in your User Preferences. To do this, on the upper right of any page, click your user name, and then select Preferences from the drop-down list. By default, the General preferences page is displayed. Click Report Services on the left, and select the Enable Flash Mode check box.

An image is not displayed in Flash Mode

The image file path may be incorrect or unsupported in Flash Mode. When specifying the file location of the image, the document designer must use an HTTP-based path. Network or local image paths do not work. See the Document Creation Guide for detailed requirements for the file location.

A widget is not displayed in Flash Mode

Each widget (or Grid/Graph that is converted into a widget) must contain a specific number of attributes and metrics on its template. See the Dashboards and Widgets Creation Guide for instructions to insert widgets into a document and to turn Grid/Graphs into widgets, as well as data requirements for each type of widget.

Some graph objects are not displayed or display differently in Flash Mode

Graph does not appear: Some graph styles are not supported in Flash Mode. For a list of graph styles supported in Flash Mode, see the Troubleshooting appendix in the Dashboards and Widgets Creation Guide.
Graph and its legend appear larger: Adjust the size of the graph and legend in MicroStrategy Developer so that they are displayed as desired in Flash Mode. Font rotation is not supported in Flash Mode.
Axis labels positioned differently: When the minimum, maximum, and interval properties for the graph’s axes are not specified, Flash Mode automatically renders the axis labels based on the data on the graph. Set the properties to maintain a consistent look for the graph in all display modes.
Size of text in graphs is different: Open the graph in MicroStrategy Developer, and from the Graph menu, select Graph Preferences. In the Graph Preferences dialog box, on the Size tab, select the Use a fixed size check box and adjust the font size of the text. Try using a DHTML display mode font size-to-Flash Mode font size ratio of 3:2.
Some graph objects are in the wrong location: Graph objects positioned in manual layout mode in MicroStrategy Developer may not be displayed in Flash Mode in the locations specified.
Y-axis formatting is not displayed: Some Y-axis formatting may not be displayed in Flash Mode. This includes the position of data labels, since Flash Mode does not currently support font rotation.
Some graph marker types are different: Only certain graph marker types are supported in Flash Mode. For example, a line graph marker that looks like a star may be displayed as a circle marker in Flash Mode.
Graph background color is different: Adjust the color in Editable Mode until you are satisfied with the color displayed in Flash Mode.
Missing data labels: Data labels placed outside of a graph's frame may not be displayed in Flash Mode.
Vertical bar graph formatting not displayed: The following vertical bar graph formatting does not display in Flash Mode: bar overlapping; depth; middle values; split dual axes; markers and text; riser shapes (rectangles are displayed); box borders around the Category title; Y-axis title; Y-axis and X-axis labels; legend text; patterns or pictures in bar risers; and data trendlines, regressions, and coefficient values.
Vertical line graph formatting not displayed: Depth properties do not display in Flash Mode.
Pie graph formatting not displayed: The following pie graph formatting does not display in Flash Mode: tilt; depth; rotation; exploding the pie slices; maintaining the graph's aspect ratio; deleting or restoring pie slices; displaying each slice proportionally to the total value; and displaying the name of the pie.
Hi-Lo-Open-Close stock graph objects not displayed: The following Hi-Lo-Open-Close graph objects do not display in Flash Mode: The first, second, and third metrics.

No search results are displayed in the Chinese help

When you search for a word or phrase on the Search page in the Chinese language help, you must insert a space between each Chinese character that you type.

Options for prompted reports are displayed when saving an unprompted report

When a saved, prompted report is reopened and the prompts are all removed, attempting to save your progress using the Save As option displays the Save As dialog box. However, the save options for prompted reports (such as the Save report as prompted check box) are still available, despite the fact that the report no longer contains any prompts.

These settings are ignored when the report is saved and do not affect the report results. Click OK to close the Save As dialog box and save the report normally.

An "Error loading" message is displayed when a user attempts to scan a barcode on the mobile device to answer a prompt

To support the scanning of barcodes using a mobile device with MicroStrategy Mobile, you must store the barcode data used in the associated prompt with a database data type that supports text data. MicroStrategy recommends using the VarChar data type for your database to store the barcode data.

After converting a dashboard into a Report Services document, the converted document cannot be viewed in Flash Mode

If you convert a dashboard that was created using HTML5 into a Report Services document, the converted document cannot be viewed in Flash Mode. If the dashboard contains features such as File and View menus, an Editor panel, and a Visualization Gallery, your dashboard was created using HTML5. An example of a dashboard created using HTML5 is displayed below.

Example of a dashboard

The Time Series widget does not display all data points

The number of data points displayed in a Time Series widget is determined by the maximum number of rows displayed in the grid on which it is based. For steps to change the number of data points displayed, see the MicroStrategy Mobile Design and Administration Guide.

I want to format the "No Data Returned" message that appears in a report or document

You can format the "No Data Returned" message that appears in a document when no data is returned in a grid or graph. For a grid or graph displayed in a document, this message is displayed in all Web Modes except Flash Mode. For steps, see the Document Creation Guide.

Enabling caching for static files

If you frequently run documents that contain static content, such as .swf, .css, and .js files that do not change between the times in which the document is run, you can cache these static files. This allows you to run documents without downloading files that do not change each time you execute a document.

The following steps enable caching when documents are executed. Steps are provided for Internet Explorer Version 7 and Firefox Version 3.6.8. Check the Internet Explorer or Firefox documentation for the latest accurate steps and additional information.

To enable caching in Internet Explorer

1 From the Tools menu, select Internet Options.
2 Click Delete under Browsing History.
3 Under Temporary Internet Files, click Delete files.
4 Click Yes to delete your temporary internet files.
5 Click Close to return to the Internet Options dialog box.
6 Under Browsing History, click Settings.
7 Select the Automatically option under Check for newer versions of stored pages.
8 In the Disk space to use field, type 250.
9 Click OK to return to the Internet Options dialog box.
10 Click OK to save changes.

To enable caching in Firefox

1 From the Tools menu, select Options.
2 Click Advanced. On the Network tab, click Clear Now to clear the cache.
3 In the Use up to __ MB of space for the cache field, type 250.
4 Click OK to save changes.

Cannot access the widget properties for a widget designed for display on mobile devices

If you attempt to modify the properties of a widget designed for display on mobile devices, Web displays the following message:

The grid headers should not be merged. Please update the grid.

You can choose to merge the row headers of a report in order to automatically merge all headers with the same value into one header. However, merged row headers are not supported for widgets designed for display on mobile devices. Steps are below to unmerge row headers for a widget. For more information on merging headers, see the Basic Reporting Guide.

To unmerge row headers for a widget in a document

1 Right-click the Grid/Graph, then select Properties and Formatting. The Properties and Formatting dialog box is displayed.
2 From the left, select Grid.
3 From the Rows column, clear the Merge check box.
4 Click Apply to apply changes, or OK to save changes and return to the document.

To unmerge row headers for a report displayed as a widget designed for display on mobile devices

1 From the Tools menu, select Report Options.
2 From the Rows column, clear the Merge check box.
3 Click OK to save changes and return to the report.

The Information Window in a Map widget always displays the same information, regardless of which map marker is selected on the mobile device

When you define an Information Window for a Map widget displayed on the mobile device, you must first define the layout to use as the Information Window. You must group data in this layout by the Map widget's location attribute, which provides the location information for each map marker displayed in the widget. For instructions to create the Information Window, see the MicroStrategy Mobile Design and Administration Guide.

To select the attribute to use to group data in the Information Window layout

1 Open the document containing the Information Window layout in Design or Editable Mode.
2 From the Dataset Objects panel to the left, right-click the location attribute, then select Add to Grouping. The attribute is added to the Group By area of the layout.

Changes made to a widget in Express Mode are reverted when saving or switching to a different display mode

When you make a change to the display of a widget in Express Mode, such as changing the metric displayed on the horizontal axis of an Interactive Bubble Grid widget, or changing the attribute elements displayed in the widget using a selector, these changes are no longer displayed when the widget is saved or displayed in a display mode other than Express Mode. Instead, make changes to the widget and save it in a display mode other than Express Mode, such as Editable Mode or Flash Mode.

Changes to the display of data in a dashboard are lost when using the browser's refresh button

When you sort, pivot, filter, or manipulate the data displayed in a dashboard, these changes may be lost if you use your browser's refresh button to update your view of the data. To update the display of a dashboard correctly, use the Refresh icon Refresh icon in the dashboard's toolbar instead.

Links to websites do not work if the URL contains a forward slash (/) at the end

If you create a link in a document to open the URL of a web page (for example, http://www.google.com/), an error message may be displayed instead of the web page when the link is clicked. In order to display linked web pages properly, remove the forward slash (/) at the end of the link URL.

Items in a List Box style selector are displayed as larger in Flash Mode

Items in a List Box style selector may be displayed as larger and cut off in Flash Mode than in other display modes. Consider doing the following:

Specify a fixed height for the selector using the Layout options. If you choose to define a fixed height for a selector, a scroll bar will be displayed if the items displayed in the selector exceed the selector's height, allowing the user to scroll to view additional items. For general information about formatting selectors, see the Selectors chapter of the Dashboards and Widgets Creation Guide. For specific information about the Height setting, see Properties and Formatting dialog box: Layout.
Resize or reposition the selector to accommodate the size of the selector items when displayed in Flash Mode.

Cannot recalculate the values of derived metrics in a Transaction Services-enabled document

Web does not support using a button or link to recalculate derived metrics displayed in text fields. To allow users to recalculate the values of derived metrics in your Transaction Services-enabled document, consider displaying your data in a grid instead. For steps, see the Document Creation Guide.

Cannot copy the data in a report grid

To select and copy the data displayed in a report displayed as a grid, export the report to Excel format, then copy the data from the exported Excel file. For steps, see Exporting a grid report.

A "Bootstrap sequence has failed" message is displayed when opening a document delivered as an .mht file

Instead of sending the document as an attachment, first export the document, then email the document as a file attachment.

A column header is missing in a report

When a report is created with attributes in both the rows and columns of the report grid, one of the attribute column headers may be hidden from display. To display this column header, perform the steps below.

To display all columns in a report

1 From the Tools menu, select Report Options. The Report Options dialog box opens.
2 Under View, clear the Remove extra column check box.
3 Click OK to save your changes.

A database instance is not included as an option in the Select a Database Connection panel for Import Data

An administrator can define security permissions for database instances created while using the Import Data feature, which include taking ownership of the database instance and defining an appropriate access control list. This ensures that no changes are made to the database instance by other users, which could cause a loss of connectivity to the data source.

Subscribed reports or documents are not being delivered

A designer can choose to restrict the delivery schedules available to users subscribing to a specific report or document, or prevent users from subscribing to the report or document altogether. Additionally, an administrator can restrict the schedules available for all reports and documents in a project. If an existing subscription uses a report or document that has been made unavailable, or if the subscription uses a schedule that is unavailable for the report or document, the subscription will not be executed.

For general information on subscribing to reports or documents, see Subscribing to reports and documents. For steps to specify the delivery options available to users subscribing to a report, see the Building Query Objects and Queries, for Designers chapter in the Basic Reporting Guide. For steps to specify the delivery options available to users subscribing to a document, see the Formatting Documents chapter in the Document Creation Guide. For details to restrict the schedules available for all reports or documents in a project, see the Web Administrator Help.

"There are no schedules defined on this project" error message displayed when subscribing to a report or document

This message is displayed when a report or document designer has chosen to prevent users from subscribing to the report or document. For background information on subscribing to reports or documents, see Subscribing to reports and documents.

Multiple objects are displayed with the same name

When a user is creating a copy of an object, and translations are available for this object's name in languages other than the one in which the user is working, the user can choose whether to keep or discard the name translations for the other languages.

By default, translations for the other languages are discarded, and the name that the user provides in the Name field when creating the copy is used to identify the copy for all users until new name translations can be provided for the other languages. This ensures that the names used to identify the original and the copy are different, regardless of the language in which they are displayed.

If the user chooses to keep the translations, the translations for the original object will be duplicated and saved with the copy. As a result, both the original object and the new copy will be displayed with identical names when viewed by users working in one of the other languages.

You can choose to keep or discard the translated names in the following ways:

When saving a copy of a report. For steps, see Saving reports.
When saving a copy of a document. For steps, see Saving documents.
When creating a copy of an object, such as filters, prompts, and custom groups. For steps, see Copying an object.

The selection in a List control is reset each time users submit changes in a Transaction Services document

If the Input Type option for the control is set to Dataset, you must ensure that the attribute form used to display each option in the List control matches the attribute form used to display the text field or attribute in a grid that is linked to the control. Separate steps are below to configure these options for List controls that are linked to an attribute in a grid or a text field. For general information on Transaction Services, see the Document Creation Guide.

Prerequisite

You must use a 9.3 Web Server and a 9.3 version of Intelligence Server when configuring the display options as described below.

To configure display options for a List control that is linked to an attribute in a grid

1 To choose the attribute form used to display the attribute in the grid, right-click the name of the attribute, point to Attribute Forms, then select a single attribute form to display. For example, to display the DESC form of the Category attribute, select DESC.
2 Right-click the grid and select Configure Transaction. The Configure Transactions Editor opens.
3 Under Input Properties, navigate to the row containing the options for the List control and click the Control Properties icon. The Control Properties for the List control are displayed.
4 From the Displayed Forms drop-down list, select the attribute form used to display the attribute in the grid. For example, if the attribute is displayed using the DESC form of the Category attribute, select DESC.
5 Click OK to save your changes.

To configure display options for a List control that is linked to a text field

1 Double-click the text field to edit it.
2 In the field, type shortcut text to be replaced with the attribute form you want to display in the text field. For example, if you want to display the DESC form of the Category attribute, type {Category@DESC}. Press ENTER to apply your changes.
3 Right-click the text field and select Configure Transaction. The Configure Transactions Editor opens.
4 Under Input Properties, navigate to the row containing the options for the List control and click the Control Properties icon. The Control Properties for the List control are displayed.
5 From the Displayed Forms drop-down list, select the name of the attribute form that you chose to display in the text field, as described in the steps above. For example, if you chose to display the DESC form of the Category attribute, select DESC.
6 Click OK to apply your changes.

The Save or Save As icon in the toolbar is missing

In MicroStrategy Web, you can determine whether the Save icon or the Save As icon is displayed in the toolbar for reports or documents. For steps, see Determining save options for dashboards, documents, and reports.

The axis scale values in a Graph visualization are not abbreviated or do not appear as expected

In a Graph visualization, you can determine whether axis scale values displayed on the X-axis and Y-axis are shown using space-saving abbreviations. For example, you can have the value 1,000,000 displayed as 1M. For large currency values, such as those above 10,000, the currency symbol is not included as part of the abbreviation. For example, the value $500,000.00 is displayed as 500K.

If there are multiple metrics included on the same drop zone area and axis as the metric whose axis values you want to format (for example, if you want to format the X-axis values, and there are multiple metrics that are placed on the Horizontal Axis area and displayed on the X-axis), see To determine whether X-axis and Y-axis values in a Graph visualization are abbreviated for detailed steps to format axis values.

Share option is not available when sharing or assigning permissions to objects

The Share option is available if your administrator has chosen to include session information (such as the server name and port number) in the URL of pages displayed in MicroStrategy Web. For more information about this setting, see the Web Administrator Help.

A link in a document sent by email does not work

Instead of adding a link to a specific website URL using the Link Editor, perform the steps below to add the link to the document.

To add a link to a website URL

1 Open the document in Design or Editable Mode.
2 Right-click the link and select Properties and Formatting.
3 Click General to the left, then select the Is Hyperlink check box. In the Hyperlink field, type the URL of the link.
4 Click OK to apply your changes.

Error message displayed when viewing a Map widget in Express Mode

The out-of-the-box Map widget that MicroStrategy provides can be displayed in Flash Mode. If it is displayed in Express Mode, the message "Basemap url is empty. Please provide a valid basemap url and try again" is shown. View the Map widget in Flash Mode instead. To avoid showing the message, you can design the Map widget to display as a grid or graph in Express Mode. For steps to create the out-of-the-box Map widget, including steps to display the Map widget as a grid or graph, see the Dashboards and Widgets Creation Guide.

Cannot view the My Reports folder

You may not have access to the My Reports folder if:

You are logged in as a guest user.
Your administrator has imposed access restrictions on users or user groups for the My Reports folder.

Cannot view specific files or folders in the Shared Reports folder

Your user and group object permissions determine the objects that are available to you and other users in the Shared Reports folder. For example, you might have access to only Folder A in the Shared Reports folder, another user might have access to only Folder B, while a group of other users has access to both folders.

For steps to define permissions for an object, see Share dialog box.

Page Expired message when browsing through pages in Web

To navigate back and forth among MicroStrategy Web pages you have visited, use the Back Back icon and Forward Forward icon buttons on the MicroStrategy Web toolbar.

Cannot group data in a dashboard: The Page-by panel has disappeared or the page-by attribute cannot be replaced

The Page-by panel is not supported by dashboards displayed using HTML5. It is temporarily displayed for dashboards that were created using Flash and contain grouped data. However, you cannot change the attribute used to group data and once you have removed the Page-by panel, the panel is permanently removed from the dashboard. Instead, use filters to group the data in a dashboard displayed using HTML5. For steps, see Limiting the data displayed in a dashboard: Filters, sheets, and pages.

Why does my History List count increases by two after I add a document to it

Your document contains one dataset report. When the document dataset report is added to the History List, the system runs that dataset report, so those results are also placed in the History List.

If the document contains two dataset reports, the History List increases by three.
