How to Connect to Amazon S3 as a Data Source

Amazon Simple Storage Service (Amazon S3) is a highly scalable cloud object storage web service offered by Amazon Web Services (AWS).

Use the MicroStrategy Amazon S3 connector to import supported file types, from Amazon Simple Storage Service buckets, into the MicroStrategy platform.


  • Ability to import the following file types:
    • .xls
    • .xlsx
    • .txt
    • .csv
    • .json
  • Select and import multiple files
  • Manual cube republish (with re-authentication, if necessary)
  • Support for MicroStrategy Web, Workstation, and Desktop 11.0 or later

MicroStrategy Web, Workstation, or Desktop 11.0 or later

A valid Amazon S3 bucket containing the supported files you would like to import

Gathering Required Information

Obtaining Your AWS Access Key ID and Secret Access Key

If you already have a valid AWS Access Key ID and Secret Access Key for your account, skip to the next section.

  1. Log into the AWS Management Console.
  2. Click the user name drop-down and choose My Security Credentials.

  3. Click Continue to Security Credentials.

  4. On the Your Security Credentials page, expand the Access keys (access key ID and secret access key) section. Click Create New Access Key to generate a new secret access key.

  5. Your new Access Key ID and Secret Access Key appears. Click Download Key File to download this information in a CSV file and save it in a secure location.

    You cannot retrieve your Secret Access Key a second time.

Finding the Name of Your Amazon S3 Bucket and Its Region

If you already know the name of the S3 bucket you wish to connect to and the AWS region it belongs in, skip this section.

  1. Log in to the AWS Management Console.
  2. Click Services. Under the Storage category, click S3.

  3. A list of buckets associated with your AWS account appears. Identify the bucket to import data from and record its Bucket name and Region.

Accessing the Connector in MicroStrategy

  1. Choose Add Data > New Data. The Data Sources dialog opens.
  2. Find the Amazon S3 connector from the data source list.

  3. Click the connector.

Using the Amazon S3 Connector to Import Data

  1. Enter the Access Key ID, Secret Access Key, Region, and Bucket Name you obtained from Gathering Required Information to connect to the Amazon S3 bucket to import from.

    You only need to provide the access key information when launching the Amazon S3 connector for the first time.

  2. Upon successful connection, you are redirected to a data import page where you can see all supported files in your Amazon S3 bucket.

  3. Identify the files to import. Double-click the filenames or drag and drop them in Selected Files.

    Drag and drop is available on all platforms except Windows Workstation and Windows Desktop.

  4. Click Submit.

    Depending on the datasets selected, this process may take some time.

    For Excel files with multiple sheets, you must select which sheets to include in the final dataset.

  5. On the Preview dialog, wrangle your data and click Finish.
